If there's a secret, director Joseph Losey isn't letting the audience in on it. A tale of two hysterics (Elizabeth Taylor and Mia Farrow) who bind together as mother and daughter, the murky proceedings embody Losey's worst tendencies as a filmmaker: the movie is cold without being chilling, confusing without being challenging. With Robert Mitchum as the male principle, Peggy Ashcroft, and Pamela Brown (1968).
