After scripting the highly praised Shiloh (1997) and its sequel, Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season (1999), Dale Rosenbloom adapts the last of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's books about a boy and his dog. An honorable, squeaky-clean children's drama, this is notable for its relatively penetrating morality and for Scott Wilson's fine performance as the meanest man in town, whose lonely existence becomes the object of intense speculation by the hero and his classmates. Sandy Tung directed; with Gerald McRaney, Jason Dolley, and Ann Dowd. PG, 90 min.
