R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 6 2013
Price: $18
Karel Capek's 1921 sci-fi drama—which introduced the word robot into the lexicon—unfolds at a factory that churns out android laborers and soldiers guaranteed to work hard and not give any lip. But experiments with the robot-making recipe, along with some well-intentioned rabble-rousing by the factory director's wife, eventually lead to an uprising, spelling doom for all of mankind. Robots taking over the world may sound entertaining, but in this Strangeloop Theatre production it's strictly dullsville. Part of the trouble has to do with Capek's repetitive, exposition-heavy script. But there's still some original and socially relevant stuff in there; you just wouldn't know it from the dour mood, wooden acting, and glacial pacing on display in Brad Gunter’s staging. —Zac Thompson
