Parents will remember The Rugrats Movie as the big-screen version of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon about a bunch of ugly, potato-headed toddlers, but to me it will always be the movie that cost critic Dave Kehr his job when he panned it in the New York Daily News. The paper's reasoning seemed to be that the film deserved a pass because little kids loved it; in fairness to Kehr it should be noted that a lot of them also like to eat their own boogers. This frantic sequel finds the diaper-obsessed heroes and their foolish parents marooned on a desert island, where they encounter the family from a more charming Nickelodeon cartoon, The Wild Thornberrys. PG, 81 min.
