Not even supercool Robert De Niro can enliven this boring tale about a team of mercenary operatives assembled by the reserved representative (Natascha McElhone) of an anonymous organization to acquire the mysterious contents of a carrying case. After several scenes in which De Niro displays uncanny resourcefulness by sizing up his new colleagues using only available props—he executes one impromptu personality test by spilling a cup of coffee—the coveted case repeatedly changes hands, revealing astonishingly tiresome layers of duplicity. De Niro has one scene that defines macho with such excess it becomes enjoyably campy, but the rest of this 1998 movie takes itself way too seriously. Directed by John Frankenheimer; written by J.D. Zeik and Richard Weisz. With Stellan Skarsgard and Jean Reno (1998).
