A goth successor to
The Rocky Horror Picture Show, this gruesome 2008 rock opera takes place in a dystopian future when epidemic organ failure has led to the commercial rise of a giant biotech firm that sells fresh organs; if customers fall behind in their payments, the company dispatches knife-wielding repo men to reclaim the merchandise. Paul Sorvino, who trained as a tenor, belts it out as president of the corporation and patriarch of a twisted family of weirdos. Adapted from a stage show, this is audacious to say the least, though the project gradually succumbs to the grinding mediocrity of its musical score, an industrial variation on
Jesus Christ Superstar but without the tunes. Director Darren Lynn Bousman, who knocked out the second, third, and fourth
Saw movies, casts this in the same sort of blue-lit urban grime. With Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton.
