The premise may sound insufferable, but this light comedy about a nursing home for retired classical musicians isn't half-bad. Ronald Harwood's script (adapted from his own play) may wring cheap laughs from seniors talking about sex and cheap sentiment from the characters belatedly learning to forgive and forget, but it keeps the mawkishness to a minimum and contains genuine insights about the lives of performers. As you might expect, the seasoned British players imbue the hackneyed material with more gravitas than it deserves, particularly Tom Courtenay as a sweet-tempered former singer, Maggie Smith as his estranged ex-wife, and Billy Connolly as his lifelong friend. Dustin Hoffman directed, ably and anonymously.
