Some of the most exciting music right now is being made at the intersection between hip-hop and underground club culture, where next-generation electronic sounds collide with classical ideals of MCing—and party-all-night hedonism gets mixed up with a deep personal-is-political commitment. This particular scene is especially strong in New York City, where it has produced microstars such as Le1f and Mykki Blanco—both on the verge of mainstream crossover—and 21-year-old Princess Nokia, who’s waiting in the wings. A Puerto Rican performer of Taino descent, she tackles club-banging beats with a nimble flow that recalls fellow NYC rappers Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj, giving the whole thing the giddily electrifying charge of a riot-grrrl band. Nokia performs at the one-year anniversary of Total Therapy, a monthly event that’s become the home base for Chicago’s avant-party scene. —Miles Raymer
