The hero of this fantasy action flick is a Catholic priest (Paul Bettany) who hunts down vampires, battles them with ninja moves, and rips them apart with blades (he's like a Jesuit but less intimidating). Adapted from a Japanese graphic-novel series, the story opens in a futuristic, blue-gray metropolis—part Vatican City, part Blade Runner—whose inhabitants confess their sins to computer monitors projecting an image of a papal Big Brother (who else but Christopher Plummer). From there the action shifts to a white-gray desert with Wild West overtones, where the renegade priest searches for the bloodsucker who killed his sister and kidnapped his young niece. This is mildly entertaining for its cheery sacrilege (crucifixes that turn into throwing stars, etc), but once the premise has been rolled out, the movie is about as surprising to watch as the Stations of the Cross. Scott Stewart directed.
