French actress Maiwenn (High Tension) cowrote and directed this lively ensemble drama about a close-knit team of police officers in Paris’s Child Protection Unit. The rocky camerawork, jagged editing patterns, and gritty subject matter recall the social realism of Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, yet the interrogation scenes and romantic subplots play like soap opera, dominated by frequent and showy emotional outbursts. Unconvincing as a portrait of law enforcement (it's hard to believe there'd be so many drama queens on the force, even in Paris), the movie is interesting nonetheless for its portrayal of modern work life and social life and the synergy between them; the various friendships, which span race, gender, and sexual identity, feel fresh and honest. Rarely does one see a movie so knowing in some respects and so clueless in others. In French with subtitles.
Director: Maïwenn
Cast: Karin Viard, Joeystarr, Marina Foïs, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Maïwenn, Karole Rocher, Frédéric Pierrot and Emmanuelle Bercot
