Jeremy Menekseoglu is without doubt one of the most ambitious, prolific, original, and gifted playwrights in Chicago. He writes practically everything that's done at his Pilsen storefront, Dream Theatre—including the Agon trilogy, an epic piece of work that was selected to be the Reader's best new play for 2010. Now Menekseoglu's got another trilogy, based on Peter Pan. This first installment is a deeply ominous prequel to the story we're all familiar with, offering surprising new ideas on who Pan is and how his universe came to be. It's well worth seeing. But understand that, for all its fascinations and fine performances, the production is necessarily inadequate. When Justin Hayford wrote the best-new-play citation for the Agon trilogy, he said, "Menekseoglu needs to hand these demanding scripts off to a company that can supply the resources they deserve." That goes for Peter Pan's Shadow, as well. Menekseoglu the writer has outgrown the practical capacities of Menekseoglu the director. —Tony Adler
