John Cadigan's autobiographical documentary gives new meaning to the phrase “filmmaking as therapy.” Afflicted with schizophrenia in college, Cadigan was institutionalized after failing to respond to shock therapy, but thanks to new medications and the encouragement of his sister, who chronicled his fight for sanity with a video camera, he made a remarkable recovery and now works as an artist in the San Francisco Bay area. The contrast between Cadigan in recovery and at his most disturbed provides an excellent antidote to romanticized and sensationalized portrayals of mental illness in Hollywood films and on TV talk shows. 84 min.
