Two short experimental documentaries by Scottish filmmaker Luke Fowler. In The Way Out, a Portrait of Xentos Jones (2003, 33 min.) archival films and collage evoke the chameleonic British underground musician, a member of bands like Milk From Cheltenham, the Homosexuals, and Die Computer Die. Pilgrimage From Scattered Points (45 min.) uses similar disorienting techniques to tell the story of the Scratch Orchestra, an important Maoist-influenced project from the early 70s. British composer Cornelius Cardew hoped to unite professional players and nonmusicians in a communitarian ideal, but his ensemble project collapsed under the weight of its ambition.
