Chicago's Outer Minds have grabbed 2012 by the neck and made it their own. The quintet just released its second strong album of the year, Behind the Mirror (Resurrection), which guitarist Zach Medearis had previously told me would be considerably darker than their Mamas & the Papas-inflected self-titled debut. And he wasn't kidding. Though Outer Minds' distinctive, spot-on vocal harmonies—by Medearis, organist Mary McKane, and tambourine thumper Gina Lira—are still front and center, and "She Calls My Name" and "Pleasure Cruise" (with its chiming Danelectro licks and shadowy theremin) are as hooky and immediate as anything in the band's repertoire, many other songs gravitate toward ominous dirges and minor keys, emphasizing moody chants and well-modulated howls more than pop melodies. The ghoulish "Look Behind the Mirror" overstays its welcome at five minutes, but rippers such as "We Are All Stone" and "Charlemagne" prove that Outer Minds can play both nasty and nice. —Peter Margasak Bare Mutants, Radar Eyes, and Blizzard Babies open. Outer Minds are also paying a free, all ages show at Reckless Records on Milwaukee at 4:30 PM. Dharma Dogs open.
