OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies

This French comedy (2006) fondly lampoons both the popular French spy movies adapted from Jean Bruce's novels in the 1950s and '60s and the colonialist era they were set in. After a fellow agent disappears, Agent OSS 117 (Jean Dujardin) is sent to Cairo, where he becomes ensnared in a web of intrigue that includes a cache of explosives. Dujardin never overplays his character's smarmy sexism and imperialist take on Egyptian culture, but to subtle comic effect it recalls the arrogance of his predecessors, including Sean Connery as James Bond. Director Michael Hazanavicius also cleverly mimics the visuals of those earlier films, including the vibrant yet slightly washed-out hues of Technicolor. With Berenice Bejo and Aure Atika.
