Filmmaker Liz Canner was hired by the California drug company Vivus to edit erotic videos for clinical trials of a new cream that would treat Female Sexual Dysfunction. News of this product had sent the company's stock soaring, but after the trials stalled, Canner couldn't get her calls to Vivus returned. In this witty 2009 broadside against the pharmaceutical industry, she debunks the very notion of FSD, interviewing doctors and activists and taking aim at targets that range from Chicago-based sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman, a nationally known TV and radio personality, to Procter & Gamble, whose testosterone patch for women gets shot down by the FDA, only to be marketed later in Europe. Canner's sense of humor complements her serious agenda, though the animation segments are a weak substitute for narrative bridges.
