One "Man" Show: An Extravaganza of Childish Proportions

When: Thursdays. Continues through Nov. 1 2012
Price: $10-$12
There was a two-person audience for Derek Shipman's one-man show on opening night—me and my friend. The production's true-life premise is that Shipman and his wife are expecting a baby at the end of November, and he wonders whether he's ready for a child of his own, 29-year-old kid that he is. Shipman certainly charmed us through 40 minutes of sketches, gags, and stories about how he grew up. But I can't say the show would've felt the same if he'd been hamming it up for a bigger group. His lessons on becoming a man aren't all that affecting; they function mainly as a way to string together occasionally funny, often oddly quiet and overlong sketches. Shipman will no doubt be a good dad, but the show needs to mature. —Asher Klein
