Chuck Mitsui's debut feature is the dreary, predictable story of a 19-year-old Hawaiian skateboarder (bland newcomer Ryan Greer) whose 15-year-old girlfriend is pregnant with his child. She wants to keep it, but he spends the movie trying to scrounge up money for an abortion. Fired from his dead-end job for chronic tardiness, the feckless youth prowls the fringes of Waikiki in search of the elusive, undefined da kine—Hawaiian Pidgin English for "whatchamacallit"—that will solve all his problems. Mitsui is trying to convey the aimless banality of his characters' lives, but instead he succumbs to it.
