Film noir has seldom been so blanc. Funded by the Sundance Institute, this indie drama by Andrew Okpeaha MacLean tells a familiar story of two young friends trying to cover up a homicide, but it transpires amid the blinding whiteness of Barrow, Alaska, with its wide-open sky, midnight sun, and endless expanses of snow. After a fight out on the ice leaves a local bully dead, the two culprits (Josiah Patkotak, Frank Qutuq Irelan) sink his body in a water hole and claim he wiped out on his snowmobile and disappeared into the Arctic Ocean. Their story begins to fall apart almost immediately, and remorse eats away at them. MacLean includes telling details of the city's Inupiat Eskimo culture (the kids are all hip-hoppers), though what really cements the sense of community is how stubbornly the two pals, and eventually their loved ones, try to cover up what's happened.
