Provocative and penetrating, this first show of Arc Theatre's first full season transports Sophocles's tragedy to a dystopian future in which the city of Thebes is overrun by drugs and prostitution. The costume design, styling, and movement (developed in collaboration with the Good Night Ladies arts collective) are bold and hypnotic, but also distracting, occasionally drawing focus away from the play's themes of patricide and incest. Though a "sexy depravity" vibe hangs over the entire show, Aram Monisoff's tortured Oedipus supplies moments of pure horror that resonate and shock in the way I imagine Sophocles intended. Good Night Ladies cofounder Jessica Marks shows an eerie range as both a prostitute and the blind prophet Teiresias. —Marissa Oberlander
