José and Nora, divorced for decades, live across the street from each other in high-rise apartments. One morning José (Fernando Lujan) discovers that Nora has killed herself and left elaborate instructions for a Passover feast to be attended by family and friends. An atheist, José quietly rebels against it all, but the willful Nora proves strong even in death. Exquisitely rendered in crystalline images that reflect Nora's immaculate taste and witty scenes imbued with José's irreverent humor, and acted by an excellent ensemble, this 2008 debut feature by writer-director Mariana Chenillo won seven Ariels (Mexican Oscars), including best picture. Thanks to Lujan, it's very funny. In Spanish with subtitles.
