Mitchell Leisen had his moments as a comedy director at Paramount (Easy Living, The Big Broadcast of 1938), but this dumb screwball farce (1942) isn't one of them. Claudette Colbert plays a lionized photographer for a splashy New York magazine, and Fred MacMurray is the macho sandhog she meets while documenting a tunnel project under the East River. Because she's engaged to a dainty Manhattan sophisticate, we know that what she needs is a real man (in the final shot, MacMurray throws her over his shoulder). Yet the script relieves her of any difficult life decision (spoiler imminent) by revealing that this lowbrow working man is more upper-class than he first appears. A bland supporting cast forces the two stars to carry this witless battle of the sexes.
