In this lively adventure comedy for girls, Abigail Breslin plays a motherless tomboy living on a secluded Fiji island with her animal pals and her father, a marine biologist (Gerard Butler). After he's lost at sea during a monsoon, she e-mails an SOS to Alex Rover, the Indiana Jones-type hero of her favorite books—not knowing that Alex is Alexandra (Jodie Foster), an agoraphobic novelist who hasn't stepped outside her San Francisco home for 16 months. Foster proves adept at broad physical comedy, the animated sequences charm, and codirectors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett send up the make-believe Rover with panache. PG, 95 min.
