Martin Scorsese created a very handsome and dynamic film, but the spectacular set pieces don't add up to much. Robert De Niro is a saxophonist struggling with the transition between swing and bop while his wife, Liza Minnelli, zooms to the top as a pop singer. This 1977 musical is long and a little choppy, but the sparks generated by the manic pairing of De Niro and Minnelli are always colorful, and Scorsese has effectively re-created a 40s studio style to go with his 40s story. Not first-rank Scorsese, but still impressive. With Lionel Stander, Mary Kay Place, and George Memmoli. 164 min.
