Bloody gangsta crap adapted by James Gibson from a 1974 novel by cult author Donald Goines. Rapper DMX stars as a drug dealer who gets women by hooking them on heroin and dumps them by substituting battery acid (love means never having to say you're sorry). I was impressed by the complexity of the narrative, which encompasses a rival dealer's conscience-stricken enforcer (Michael Ealy) and a slumming white novelist (David Arquette) who drives the fatally wounded DMX to the hospital and inherits his taped autobiography. But the storytelling pleasures are drowned out by the usual bitch-slap operatics. Ernest Dickerson directed. R, 90 min. By J.R. Jones
