Much has been made of dubstep's unexpected journey from the London dance-music underground to American sports arenas, and rightly so—Americans' embrace of electronic dance music brings us up to speed with the rest of the world, as though we'd decided overnight to adopt the metric system. But really the dubstep phenomenon is just a repeat of rave culture's initial explosion in popularity in the UK and Europe more than two decades ago. In the current iteration, London DJ/producer Nero would play the Paul Oakenfold role, roughly speaking—that is, he's steering the genre straight toward a pop audience while retaining its dignity. His 2011 LP Welcome Reality (Interscope) has enough hooks and gloss to win over the most cautious Katy Perry fan, but you can still see the outline of the brilliant kid who conquered the aforementioned underground. —Miles Raymer Dillon Francis and LoBounce open.
