Emma Thompson dons prosthetic makeup to play the title character, a cross between Mary Poppins and Quasimodo who arrives at the home of a widowed and impoverished undertaker (Colin Firth) to reform his seven nasty-tempered children. This tacky children's feature was adapted by Thompson from Christianna Brand's “Nurse Matilda” books of the 1960s, but as the name change might suggest, it's also partly geared toward fans of the British reality show Supernanny and its American knockoffs. Highly recommended if you want to see a distinguished cast of British character actors (Kelly Macdonald, Imelda Staunton, Derek Jacobi, Angela Lansbury) tarted up in garish Victorian costumes and badly executing a Three Stooges-style cake fight. Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine) directed. PG, 98 min.
