Agent Kill Kill and his Russian contact are sitting in a swank Italian bar planning a hit job when a strange figure emerges from the shadows. It's Kill Kill's mom, on vacation, and wouldn't you know it—the entire Kill Kill clan is staying right across the street. The message of this, one of eight short plays in an A-Squared Theatre Workshop production, is clear: family is inescapable, and that goes double for mothers. Now in its third year, this uneven showcase takes Asian motherhood as its theme, though food also emerges as a touchstone. The most successful blending of the two is "Dim Sum," about a painfully awkward intergenerational lunch outing. Other scenes of dramatic dining fall flat, but it's worth stomaching these if you'd like to get your fill of pushy mothers and killer comedic instincts. —Hannah Gold
