Adam Sandler adapts his sweet-natured doofus shtick to this remarkably faithful remake of Frank Capra's 1936 rube-in-the-big-city comedy Mr. Deeds Goes to Town—which suggests that Capra may have invented dumb movies before their time. The new version, directed by Steven Brill, inflates Deeds's inherited windfall into the billions, but he still gets his innocent kicks from sliding down banisters, hooting in echoey halls, and doing battle with opera-loving snobs. As a bizarre re-creation of Depression-era class fantasy and caricature, this plays up the absurdism more than the original, though the triumph of naivete still feels disingenuous. The mincing supporting cast includes Peter Gallagher, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, and a desperate-seeming Winona Ryder as a tabloid reporter. Tim Herlihy's screenplay owes a serious debt to Robert Riskin's prior adaptation of Clarence Budington Kelland's short story “Opera Hat.” 96 min.
