Backwoods poet Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) inherits a fortune, goes to New York, and meets virtually every kind of big-city corruption and cynicism before he eventually opts for the New Deal solution of sharing the wealth and giving the little guy an economic break. Frank Capra's 1936 populist classic is a perfect example of the director's persistent theme of a village type forcing urbanites to accept his values, thus creating an all-embracing, naively optimistic unity in the midst of strife-torn Depression America. Capracorn at its best; with Jean Arthur, Raymond Walburn, and Lionel Stander.
