Charlie Hinton Silver Jr., owner of Midway Plantation in North Carolina, decides to protect more than two centuries of family tradition from the shopping-mall sprawl of Raleigh by physically relocating the Hinton ancestral home to a quieter tract of land miles away. Bearing witness to this move are his filmmaker cousin, Godfrey Cheshire, and New York University historian Robert Hinton, who, while no blood relation, is descended from slaves who worked on the plantation. The men reflect on the myths of the Old South, from Gone With the Wind to Roots, when suddenly more Hintons surface, African-American descendants of Cheshire and Silver's great-great-great-grandfather. What begins as a leave-taking turns into a homecoming that reflects the mixed-race society of the modern south. 98 min.
