You can pay a master chef to make you a ham sandwich, but what's the point? After hiring Hollywood icons Brian De Palma, John Woo, and Robert Towne for the first two Mission: Impossible movies, producer-star Tom Cruise handed this one to alumni from the TV spy drama Alias (writer-director J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci), and the result is nearly as good as the best in the series, Woo's Mission: Impossible 2. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the ice-cold villain, an arms trafficker brokering an international deal for a doomsday weapon, and Michelle Monaghan is Cruise's one true love (replacing Thandie Newton, his previous one true love). With Ving Rhames, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Billy Crudup, Simon Pegg, and Laurence Fishburne. PG-13, 126 min.
