You have to put up with Giorgio Moroder's boring and often risible rock score in order to enjoy the beautiful restoration work Moroder commissioned for Fritz Lang's classic of 1926 (apart from certain alterations in the editing), but it isn't a bad trade. With the images returned to something like their original depth and detail (and tinted as they were during the silent era), the emphasis shifts from the silly social philosophy of Thea von Harbou's screenplay to the enveloping oneiric force of Lang's architectural vision. Departing from a masterful manipulation of space, Lang transforms the futuristic city of the title into a field of dreams centered on death and sexuality. With Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, and Gustav Froelich. 87 min.
