Chris (Christian Bale), a husband and father living in suburban London in 1977, becomes wistful when a free-spirited old friend blows into town between exotic, promiscuous adventures. An extensive flashback shows the life he'd been leading as an aspiring art photographer in Paris in the late 60s before making the sensible choice to settle down. Though an apparition has warned him that suburbia is a state of mind, this fairly serious meditation on conventionality and monogamy blames his ennui on external forces, remaining adolescent even when it suggests its hero has grown up. Philip Saville directed a screenplay based on a novel by Julian Barnes; with Emily Watson, Lee Ross, and Elsa Zylberstein.
