Matthew Dear, Light Asylum, Kid Color

When: Tue., Nov. 6, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15
Matthew Dear's discography has always looked like an effort to disprove the outdated and wrongheaded idea that electronic music is by nature cold and soulless. Even his early, more strictly techno-inspired cuts are infused with a warmth that speaks volumes about the presence an actual person behind the MIDI controllers—and over the course of his prolific career Dear has revealed a little more of himself with each release. His latest, Beams, for longtime label Ghostly International, is maybe his most human record yet, with a ratio of two parts pop per one part dance music. Dear's organic analog tones and multitracked baritone vocals are reminiscent of Bowie and Eno's collaborative albums, as is the hint of ironic dissoluteness on the slithery electro-soul cut "Up & Out," where he winkingly complains about living a rock star's decadent lifestyle. —Miles Raymer Light Asylum and Kid Color open.
