Nine teenage boys embark on a lion hunt across southern Kenya to appease the rain god whose drought is wasting Masai villages in this mythic 2004 adventure story from French writer-director Pascal Plisson. Painted in warrior reds and yellows, the indigenous actors nearly merge with the awe-inspiring landscape; cinematographer Manuel Teran shot in 35-millimeter but digitally manipulated the color to suggest a dream state consonant with the heroes' rite of passage. Olivier Dazat coscripted, felicitously blending elements of documentary and travelogue much as he did in Himalaya. The resulting portrait sidesteps ethnography yet conveys the essence of a magnificent people. In Maa with subtitles. 94 min.
