Tucked away in Gage Park on 53rd and Kedzie, Manolo's Tamales is more of a just-drop-in place than a destination restaurant. Still, if you find yourself on this stretch, it's an excellent spot for made-in-house tamales, stuffed with pork and chicken, drizzled with green and red sauce, or rendered sweet with strawberry and pineapple. If there are two of you--or if youre as hungry as two people--get a mixed dozen for eight bucks. These are luscious little masa torpedoes, fortified with a hefty admixture of manteca (sounds better than "lard," right?), but Manolo makes more than tamales. The chorizo torta is quite excellent, the crumbly spiced sausage complemented by avocado and tomato. We even liked (gasp!) the burrito, filled with carne asada, thick and tender as a babys leg. To drink, the guayaba atole was much better than youd think a warm, corn-based fruit drink could be.
