A high school filmmaker (Michael Angarano), hoping to win a prestigious contest, enlists the services of a grumpy old juicer (Christopher Plummer) who used to work as a lighting technician for Orson Welles but now rots away in a nursing home for movie veterans. This indie drama spends a lot of time mooning over classical Hollywood cinema, but its own visual style tends toward the pointless flash of music videos. The story grows increasingly mawkish as the teen decides to make a documentary about substandard nursing homes; when Plummer drunkenly breaks into a dog pound to rescue his fellow mutts, I wished Welles would magically appear and smack him upside the head. Michael Schroeder directed his own script; with M. Emmet Walsh and Robert Wagner. 107 min.
