Mac DeMarco, Naomi Punk, Calvin Love

When: Thu., March 21, 9:30 p.m. 2013
One of the most in-demand artists at last year’s CMJ Music Marathon was Montreal-based slacker troubadour Mac DeMarco, who played what felt like dozens of shows during the weeklong festival. That's slightly ironic, considering that among the vast number of acts at CMJ, few seem as disinterested as DeMarco either in "buzzworthy" coolness or in typical notions of professionalism. The two full-length albums he released last year, Rock and Roll Night Club and 2 (both on Captured Tracks), are low-key collages of 70s soft rock and 90s indie rock whose laid-back affability is one of the biggest parts of their considerable charm. That breezy amicability carries over to DeMarco’s live shows, which he tends to treat less like traditional concerts and more like excuses for him and his band to goof off for a roomful of friends that they haven’t necessarily been introduced to yet. But as airy and mellow as the music is, it can still strike a nerve—as you already know if you’ve been caught up in his casually melancholy signature song, "Ode to Viceroy." —Miles Raymer
