This drama of 70s suburban malaise on Long Island hardly ranks with Ordinary People (1980) or The Ice Storm (1997), but thanks to a strong ensemble cast, it's poignant and funny. Rory Culkin holds the movie's center as a 13-year-old schoolboy who's smitten with a neighbor girl (Emma Roberts) and shaken by the discovery that his dad (Alec Baldwin), an aggressive realtor, is sleeping with her mother (Cynthia Nixon). Timothy Hutton plays the girl's father, whose debilitating infection with Lyme disease serves as a somewhat heavy-handed metaphor for the downside of American affluence, and Kieran Culkin ably supports his real-life brother, Rory, as the hero's older sibling. Derick Martini directed a semiautobiographical script he cowrote with his brother, Steven; the two previously collaborated on the indie drama Smiling Fish and Goat on Fire (1999). R, 95 min.
