Cleveland singer (and sometimes rapper) Lorine Chia has a beautiful, brassy voice that can dazzle with little or no instrumental accompaniment—for instance, on a somber, minimalist version of “Strange Fruit,” from last year’s Naked Truths (Make Millions). One impressive thing about Naked Truths (which Chia calls an EP, even though it has 14 tracks) is the way she hops from genre to genre but maintains a coherent flow—the nocturnal post-Drake R&B of “Feel the Music” and the slinky neolounge of “Wondering Where” fit together particularly well. Chia’s at her best when she aims for the charts—the skeletal percussion, fluttery synths, and lilting guitar samples on “Might Come Around” would sound at home alongside most Top 40 pop-rap, and Chia’s assured vocals have me wondering why it isn’t already a crossover hit. —Leor Galil Keiph Ali, Natureal, and Azmattic open.
