Lee Blessing's 2007 drama unfolds in a dystopian future where sex offenders are locked up for life in penal colonies scattered throughout rural America. What's more, the rules for what constitutes a sex offense have been stretched so far that they even cover artists whose work features nudity. That's how photographer Tuck ends up imprisoned alongside Nye, a pedophile. His admirable defense of civil liberties notwithstanding, Blessing gets heavy-handed in depicting Tuck's ordeal—particularly his clashes with a cartoonishly villainous psychotherapist (Joel Thompson, all but twirling his mustache). This Idle Muse Theatre Company production is far more interesting when the focus shifts to Nye, thanks in part to Matthew Dyson's alternately chilling and sympathetic performance, and in part to Blessing's nuanced, open-ended interrogation of preventive detention. —Zac Thompson
