A typically overproduced and underdeveloped MGM star vehicle (1936), the kind of film that explains why so many great stills and so few good movies came out of that studio in the 30s. Spencer Tracy is a newspaper editor trying to pry a scandal out of heiress Myrna Loy; William Powell and Jean Harlow are bait. Jack Conway, the director, always seemed unusually raucous for an MGM functionary, but what he gains in momentum he loses in his ham-fisted mise-en-scene. It's not a bad time, but it's a long way from the best of the era's screwball comedies. 98 min.
