No matter how many Lenny Bruce films come on the market, this is the only filmed record of Bruce's nightclub act. Made in 1966 at Basin Street West in San Francisco, very shortly before his death, it shows him wallowing in self-pity and paranoia, nearly broken but still capable of reeling off some devastating observations on America, its legal system, its social insanities, and its more absurd taboos. Painful to watch, but compelling. John Magnuson directed. 72 min.
