The wrestling scenes are the best part of this drama produced by World Wrestling Entertainment; director Mel Damski generates excitement and even displays some visual ingenuity in the matches (in one sequence he manages to fit two bouts into a single shot). The story is less inspired, however: a bookish high school student comes to terms with his father’s death and reunites with his estranged brother while training to be a state champion. Like an all-American inversion of totalitarian cinema, the drama mainly yields a rote confirmation of national values--in this case family and believing in oneself--but the players still find some authentic grace notes in the material. Patricia Clarkson infuses her caricatured single-mother with a bruised 9-to-5 weariness, and pro-wrestler Jon Cena, as the brother, is surprisingly effective doing a blue-collar number.
