Alexis Rogers channels jazz singer Billie Holiday in this Porchlight Music Theatre production, a portrait of the drug-addicted diva toward the end of her short life. Taking the form of a gig in a seedy Philadelphia nightclub, Lanie Robertson's script finds Holiday interspersing her songs (the classic "Strange Fruit" and many others) with alternately hilarious and anguished reminiscences about her impoverished childhood, her encounters with racism, and her enduring love for the guy who got her hooked on heroin. Rogers nails Holiday's gritty, thin, yet powerful vocal style, with its conversational intimacy and expressive behind-the-beat phrasing. —Albert Williams
