A landmark film by Alain Resnais, whose relentless formalism often seemed a rebuke to fellow members of the New Wave. His philosophical preoccupations with time and memory do not distract from the emotional grounding of this story, which concerns an aging revolutionary (Yves Montand) who must struggle to keep his hope alive. The plot is periodically interrupted by flash-forwards, a technique that Resnais described as the “future conditional” tense of filmmaking, and they contribute much to the movie's sense of poetic doom. With Genevieve Bujold, in an early part, and Ingrid Thulin, Dominique Rozan, and Michel Piccoli (1966).
