Cheap, good Mexican near the Brown Line stop.

Our Review

For about two years about half of my diet came from the Mexican kitchen at La Amistad, a small taqueria on Montrose just west of the Brown Line stop. Whether I was coming home drunk or out for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon, the sweet siren song of La Amistad's divine burritos picadillo and flour quesadillas was impossible to resist. More than the food, it was the details they got right. Each take-home order, for instance, came with three cups of sour cream, guacamole, and homemade salsa. When dining in, the guac was served in a deep-fried flour tortilla bowl. In recent years they've classed the place up a bit, coating the menus in plastic and adding honest-to-God Coca-Cola, containing real sugar, in a 16-ounce glass bottle, imported from Mexico. Happily, not everything has changed. Grace, the sweet-natured owner, seems to be there most every day and when I come in or walk by she always manages to smile and say a few quick words in Spanish, as if she remembers me from all those years ago. I suspect that she does.
