After a 40-year career playing jut-jawed assholes, Michael Douglas must relish the occasional oddball role: he gave a winning performance as the pot-addled professor in Wonder Boys, and he seems to be having a ball in this funny debut feature by Mike Cahill, playing a rascally old hippie just released from a mental hospital. His responsible teenage daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) wants him to get a life, but he becomes convinced there are Spanish doubloons buried under the local Costco. The product placement is so egregious—with scenes prominently set at McDonald's, Petco, and Chuck E. Cheese—that it actually nurtures Cahill's theme of treasure lurking just beyond the crapola of American life. Unfortunately, that's also the theme of The Price Is Right. PG-13, 93 min.
