Longtime dance duo Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer spent two weeks in Argentina this past spring, doing the tango every night. Their research for this show included swing and the Lindy, too. But don't expect reality-show-style ballroom pizzazz from the results. Contact improv was part of the equation in creating Tacit, an evening-length quartet Antonick and Meyer are performing with Marc Macaranas and Cara Sabin. Bits of the tango creep in--a hand at the nape of the neck, intertwining feet--but the piece is more about the emotional aspects of ballroom dance: display, intimacy, impassivity, aggression, domination. Tacit also makes inventive use of its venue, a church hall with a stage, an elevator, and--visible through French doors--a separate room. Lit and furnished like an old-fashioned parlor, that other room is a site for some of the dance, adding a voyeuristic element to the piece. Joseph Saint Charles provides the partly improvised original music, playing a tableful of mostly percussive instruments. --Laura Molzahn
